Role theory is a perspective in sociology and in social psychology that considers most of everyday activity to be the acting out of socially defined categories (e.g., mother, manager, teacher). Each social role is a set of rights, duties, expectations, norms and behaviours that a person has to face and fulfill. Volunteer, a non-profit initiative designed to make volunteering easier, is an important component of the role in society. In this research program, the role of the volunteers in society was analysised based on the role theory in sociology.
The World Expo was held in Shanghai China in the year of 2010. A great number of university students are involved in as various kinds of roles in the Expo. Different students with different background worked in different positions plaing different roles, which is exactly like the form of a society. The volunteer roles were highlighted in this research projet. Stories from the students volunteers are quoted, and data from the questionnaires distributed to various volunteers are collected and analysised. Teamwork and individual work are compaired, and also discussed in relative meetings. Also, long-term institutions for volunteers to work better were also proposed. Continuous study will also be launched.
